EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving presents the plans and section of the renowned Odeon of Pericles, an ancient Greek theater located in Athens, Greece. The Odeon, also known as Odeo di Pericle in Italian, was a significant architectural and cultural landmark, showcasing the grandeur and sophistication of ancient Greek architecture. The intricate detail of this engraving reveals the various components of the Odeon's design. The portico, with its impressive columns and arcades, frames the entrance to the theater. The stage, complete with a proscenium, understage, hyposcenium, and parascenium, was the heart of the performance space. The orchestra, where the chorus would gather, is depicted at the front of the stage. The seating area, consisting of stalls and triangular machines, provided ample space for the audience. The elevation of the building reveals the tiered seating, with boxes and a timello, a dressing room for actors, located at the sides. The prompters' box, where the prompter would assist the actors, is also visible. The Odeon of Pericles was not only a place of entertainment but also a symbol of the ancient Greek culture and their love for drama and performance. This engraving, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1826, offers a fascinating glimpse into the history and design of this remarkable ancient Greek theater.
