EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, a plaque dedicated to the valor and sacrifice of Captain Clement Robertson VC and Gunner Allen, DCM, adorns the wall of Merlijn Restaurant in Ieper, Belgium. The unveiling of this memorial took place on 29 April 2019, in the presence of Lieutenant General A.D. Leakey, the British Ambassador Alison Rose, family members, and members of the Friends of the Tank Corps Memorial. The plaque serves as a lasting tribute to these brave soldiers who gave their lives during the First World War. Captain Robertson, a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor, is buried in Oxford Road CWGC Cemetery. Gunner Allen, who was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, is commemorated on the Louverval Memorial in Cambrai. The Tank Corps, to which both soldiers belonged, is further honored with a flagpole in the garden of Merlijn Restaurant. The unveiling ceremony held great significance, as it marked the remembrance of the heroic actions of these soldiers during the Battle of Ypres, also known as the Second Battle of Ieper, which took place between 1914 and 1918. The event brought together individuals from various backgrounds to pay homage to the sacrifices made by Captain Robertson and Gunner Allen during the Great War. This photograph captures a moment of solemn reflection and commemoration, as the community comes together to honor the bravery and sacrifice of these two soldiers and the Tank Corps they served in. The plaque on the wall of Merlijn Restaurant serves as a constant reminder of their valiant actions and the enduring impact of the First World War on the lives of those who lived through it.
