EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the Plaque to Captain Robertson VC, located at the Merlijn Restaurant in the Ypres area of Belgium. The plaque honors the bravery and sacrifice of Captain William Robertson VC, a hero of the First World War. Born in Ieper, or Ypres, in 1886, Robertson joined the British Army in 1903 and saw action in both the Second Boer War and the First World War. During the latter, he distinguished himself with exceptional courage and leadership, earning the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration awarded for valor, for his actions during the Battle of Loos in September 1915. Robertson's citation reads, "For most conspicuous bravery. During an attack on the enemy's position, this officer led his company forward under heavy fire, and, although severely wounded himself, continued to encourage and rally his men, and finally, when the enemy counter-attacked, he led a successful counter-attack with his company, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy and capturing several prisoners." Despite his heroism, Robertson was killed in action just a few days later, on September 23, 1915. His loss was deeply felt by his comrades and the people of Ieper, and the plaque at Merlijn Restaurant serves as a lasting tribute to his memory. The Plaque to Captain Robertson VC is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War and the enduring bond between the people of Ypres and the British military. The Merlijn Restaurant, with its historic plaque, continues to be a popular destination for visitors to the area, who come to pay their respects to this brave and heroic soldier.
