EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, drawn and etched by Jacob Ludwig Admiral in the second edition of "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten" (Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects) published by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam in 1774, showcases the fascinating transformation of the Poplar Hawk-moth, Laothoe populi. The image captures both the adult moth and its larva, also known as the caterpillar and pupa, respectively. The Poplar Hawk-moth is a large and striking insect, with the adult moth boasting a wingspan of up to 10 centimeters. The moth's wings are adorned with intricate patterns and vibrant colors, resembling those of a hawk, making it an excellent mimic of various bird species. The larva, on the other hand, is quite different from the adult form. It is a caterpillar with a distinctive green and black striped body, covered in tiny hairs. The caterpillar feeds on the leaves of poplar trees, and once it has grown to a certain size, it forms a pupa, or chrysalis, in which it transforms into an adult moth. The meticulous attention to detail in this engraving is a testament to the scientific curiosity and artistic skill of the 18th century. The work of Admiral and Sluyter contributed significantly to the fields of entomology and botany, providing accurate and detailed records of various insect species and their life cycles. This beautiful and intriguing image of the Poplar Hawk-moth serves as a reminder of the wonders of nature and the importance of documenting and preserving the natural world.
