EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-tinted engraving is a portrait of Lady Emma Hamilton, the famous mistress of Admiral Horatio Nelson. The image, created by Frederick Christian Lewis after an illustration by Sir Thomas Lawrence, was published in P.G. Patmore's Cabinet of Gems in 1837 by Ackermann & Co. in London. Emma Hamilton, born in 1765, rose to prominence in the late 18th century as a dancer and actress, before becoming the mistress of the renowned naval hero, Horatio Nelson. In this portrait, Lady Hamilton is depicted in a see-through pink dress, with a loose turban adorned with ribbons. Her expressive face is turned upward, as if in deep thought or contemplation. The presence of a young boy, believed to be her nephew, adds an intriguing element to the portrait. The delicate hand-tinting brings the image to life, adding depth and vibrancy to the pink dress and the boy's clothing. Sir Thomas Lawrence, a prominent British portrait painter of the time, sketched the original portrait in crayon, which was then used as the basis for this engraving by Frederick Christian Lewis. The resulting image is a stunning representation of Lady Hamilton's beauty and charisma, capturing the public's fascination with her scandalous relationship with Nelson and her role in British society during the Victorian era.
