EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Gaius Pescennius Niger, also known as Roman Emperor Pescennius Niger, who ruled from 135 to 166 AD. The image is a copperplate engraving taken from "De Roomsche Monarchy," a seminal work by Abraham Bogaert published in Utrecht, Netherlands, in 1697. Pescennius Niger, born in Syria, rose to prominence during the turbulent period of the Roman Empire, a time marked by power struggles and political instability. When Macrinus, the reigning emperor, was assassinated in 217 AD, Pescennius Niger declared himself emperor and engaged in a civil war against the eventual victor, Septimius Severus. Despite his military prowess and impressive reign, Pescennius Niger's rule was short-lived. He was defeated by Severus in the Battle of Issus in 217 AD, and ultimately met his end in 218 AD during the siege of Hatra. This portrait, a testament to the artistic skills of the 17th century, offers a glimpse into the regal bearing and noble countenance of Pescennius Niger. His imperial title, "Augustus," is inscribed at the bottom of the image, underscoring his status as a Roman Caesar. The engraving also features the likenesses of his rivals, Septimius Severus and Lucius Septimius Severus, highlighting the complex political landscape of the Roman Empire during this time. The intricately detailed copperplate engraving, produced during the Baroque period, showcases the artistic mastery and historical significance of the Roman Empire, making it an invaluable addition to any collection of classical art or Roman history.
