The engraving was created by Abraham Bogaert. Pupienus, born around 170 AD, was a member of the equestrian order and was adopted by Emperor Gordian III as his co-ruler in 238 AD. Together, they ruled as the Gordian Dynasty, with Pupienus taking the titles Marcus Antonius Gordianus Pius and Augustus.
