EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Giarre and Stanghi for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1847, showcases the portraits of six early Russian rulers: King Rurik (1), Igor I (2), Saint Olga (3), Sviatoslav I Igorevich (4), Vladimir Sviatoslavich the Great (5), and Ivan IV the Terrible (14). The image opens with Rurik, the legendary founder of the Russian state in 862 AD, depicted in regal attire with a crown adorned with precious stones and a fur-trimmed robe. Igor I, Rurik's grandson, is shown wearing a traditional Slavic headdress and holding a scepter. Next, we encounter Saint Olga, the first Russian ruler to be canonized, who is portrayed wearing a richly embroidered robe and holding a cross. Sviatoslav I Igorevich, the son of Igor I, is depicted as a fierce warrior, wearing armor and holding a sword. Vladimir Sviatoslavich the Great, who is credited with the Christianization of Kievan Rus', is shown wearing a Byzantine-style robe and holding a cross. Lastly, Ivan IV the Terrible, the first Tsar of Russia, is portrayed as a powerful monarch, wearing a fur-trimmed robe and holding a scepter and orb. This enchanting illustration offers a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of early Russia, providing a visual representation of the powerful rulers who shaped its destiny. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the handcoloured copperplate engraving bring the portraits to life, making this a truly captivating work of art.
