EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving showcases an impressive lineage of Russian Tsars from the House of Romanov. The portrait includes six monarchs: Michael I (1655-1668), Alexis I (1645-1718), Fyodor III (1661-1682), Peter I the Great (1672-1725), Catherine II the Great (1729-1796), and Peter II (1715-1730). Michael I, the first in the series, is depicted with a serious expression and a long beard. Alexis I, his successor, is shown wearing a crown and holding a sceptre, symbolizing his royal power. Fyodor III, the youngest son of Alexis I, is portrayed as a young man with a thoughtful expression. Peter I the Great, one of the most renowned rulers in Russian history, is depicted in military attire, reflecting his focus on modernizing the Russian army and navy. Catherine II the Great, who expanded the Russian Empire significantly, is shown with a regal expression and wearing a crown adorned with jewels. Lastly, Peter II, the short-lived successor of Catherine II, is portrayed as a young man with a serious expression. This engraving, created by Giarre and Stanghi for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1847, offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the Russian monarchy. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the handcolouring bring the portraits to life, making this an essential addition to any collection of historical artwork or Russian history.
