EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured engraving depicts the Pygmy Musk Deer of Sumatra, Moschus pygmaeus, a tiny and elusive ruminant species native to the forests of Sumatra and Borneo. The image was drawn and engraved by Harriet or Edward Griffith, based on a specimen housed at Exeter Change in London, and was published as part of Baron Cuvier's renowned work, "The Animal Kingdom," in 1827. The Pygmy Musk Deer is the smallest living deer species, with adults measuring only 30-40 centimeters in height at the shoulder and weighing between 2.5 to 5 kilograms. They are characterized by their short, curved, and slender horns, which are only present in males, and their distinctive white spots and stripes, which provide excellent camouflage in their forested habitats. These deer are herbivores, feeding on a variety of vegetation, including grasses, leaves, and shoots. They are solitary animals, with males and females only coming together during the mating season. Pygmy Musk Deer are also known for their musk glands, which are located near their anus and are used to mark their territory and communicate with other deer. The Pygmy Musk Deer is considered a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as hunting for their musk glands, which are used in traditional medicine and perfumes. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these fascinating animals and their habitats, ensuring their survival for future generations to appreciate and study.
