EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving, drawn and engraved by Georg Wolfgang Knorr, showcases two exquisite coral species, the Red Coral, Corallium rubrum, and the Organ Pipe Coral, Tubipora musica. The image is taken from Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae, published by Blusse and Son in Nuremberg in 1771. The corals were part of the Wunderkammer or Cabinet of Curiosities owned by Dr. Christoph Jacob Trew. The Red Coral, also known as Noble Coral or Common Red Coral, is a massive, branching coral that forms large colonies in the Mediterranean Sea. Its vibrant red color is due to the presence of the pigment astaxanthin, which also gives the lobster its distinctive hue. The Red Coral has been valued for its beauty and rarity for centuries, making it a popular addition to collections of natural curiosities. The Organ Pipe Coral, also known as Tube Coral, is a unique and intricate coral that forms long, tubular structures, giving it the appearance of an organ pipe. This coral is found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans and is characterized by its delicate, branching structures and its ability to filter feed. The Organ Pipe Coral is a vital part of the coral reef ecosystem, providing shelter and food for a variety of marine organisms. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving provides a glimpse into the natural world of the 18th century, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the coral species that continue to captivate and inspire us today.
