EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing handcoloured copperplate engraving by Thomas Rowlandson, after an illustration by Henry Bunbury, depicts a Regency gentleman attempting an extraordinary feat of equestrianism: riding a horse with one hind leg tied. The gentleman, dressed in the fashionable attire of the time, wears a top hat and holds the reins in one hand while the other hand clutches a cane. His hind leg is buckled into the surcingle, and he looks determinedly forward, focusing on maintaining his balance. The scene is not without its comical elements, as a man with a tobacco pipe and ale jug shouts encouragement from the sidelines. Another rider, who has lost his seat from a galloping horse, falls to the ground in the background. This allegorical illustration, taken from Geoffrey Gambado's "An Academy for Grown Horsemen and Annals of Horsemanship," published in London in 1809, may be interpreted as a commentary on the challenges and risks of riding, as well as the importance of perseverance and determination. The engraving is further enhanced by the presence of a winged woman and an angel, who appear to be observing the scene from above. They may represent the apotheosis of horsemanship or the ideal of riding skill. The hobby of horse riding was a popular pastime among the Regency elite, and this caricature highlights the sport's challenges and the importance of mastering the art of riding. The gentleman's determined expression, the supportive crowd, and the whimsical elements of the illustration all combine to create a lively and engaging image that continues to captivate viewers over two centuries after its creation.
