This handcoloured lithograph showcases two magnificent hornbills: the Rhinoceros Hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) and the Abyssinian Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus abyssinicus). The Rhinoceros Hornbill, also known as the Indian Rhinoceros Hornbill, is the larger of the two species with a length of up to 120 cm and a wingspan of up to 180 cm. The male is characterized by a distinctive casque, a helmet-like structure above its beak, which is used for amplifying vocalizations and display. The Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, native to sub-Saharan Africa, is the largest of all ground hornbills, with a length of up to 100 cm and a wingspan of up to 150 cm. The female has a distinctive white eyering and wattles, while the male sports a bright red gular pouch. Both species are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, insects, and small vertebrates.
