EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases two magnificent hornbills: the Rhinoceros Hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) and the Abyssinian Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus abyssinicus). The Rhinoceros Hornbill, also known as the Indian Rhinoceros Hornbill, is the larger of the two species with a length of up to 120 cm and a wingspan of up to 180 cm. The male is characterized by a distinctive casque, a helmet-like structure above its beak, which is used for amplifying vocalizations and display. The Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, native to sub-Saharan Africa, is the largest of all ground hornbills, with a length of up to 100 cm and a wingspan of up to 150 cm. The female has a distinctive white eyering and wattles, while the male sports a bright red gular pouch. Both species are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, insects, and small vertebrates. They are also known for their unique communal roosting and nesting habits. This exquisite print is taken from Th. Lejeune's Complete Works of Buffon, published in Brussels in 1837. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring out the natural beauty and grandeur of these fascinating birds, making it a must-have for any ornithology enthusiast's collection.
