EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored engraving depicts a Roan Antelope, Hippotragus equinus (previously known as Antilope equina), a majestic and elegant ruminant native to the savannas and woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. The Roan Antelope is easily recognizable by its distinctive coat, which features a reddish-brown base color with large, irregular, white spots. The engraving is based on an illustration by the renowned English natural history artist, Charles Hamilton Smith, from Edward Griffiths' seminal work, "The Animal Kingdom" by the Baron Cuvier, published in London by Whittaker in 1827. The illustration was produced from a specimen housed in the British Museum. Thomas Landseer, a skilled engraver, meticulously brought Smith's illustration to life through this intricate engraving. The attention to detail is evident in the textured fur, the lifelike eyes, and the subtle shading that adds depth and dimension to the image. The Roan Antelope is a herbivore and a member of the Bovidae family, which also includes antelopes, goats, and sheep. They are social animals that live in herds and are known to form alliances to defend themselves against predators. They are also agile jumpers and can leap high fences, making them a challenge for hunters. This engraving is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world and the skill of the artists and scientists who documented it. It remains an important historical record of the Roan Antelope and a stunning work of art in its own right.
