Roasting the baron of beef, Windsor Castle 1887

Roasting the baron of beef, Windsor Castle. The baron of beef was an annual institution at Windsor and was cut from the first prize fat bullock at the Shaw Farm Sale. The trademan who bought the beast had the privilege of supplying the great joint to the Castle. After it was roasted, should her Majesty be elsewhere, it was sent to the place where she happened to be residing and put on the buffet on Christmas Day.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Roasting the Baron of Beef, Windsor Castle (1887): A Traditional Victorian Christmas Feast This image from the annals of Victorian England depicts the annual roasting of the 'Baron of Beef' at Windsor Castle. The 'Baron,' an esteemed institution at the royal residence, was sourced from the first prize fat bullock at the Shaw Farm Sale. The fortunate trademan who secured the coveted beast was granted the privilege of supplying the magnificent joint to the Castle. Once the baron of beef was expertly roasted, often on a spit turned by a dedicated turnspit, it became a sumptuous centerpiece of the royal Christmas feast. Should Her Majesty be elsewhere on Christmas Day, the roasted joint was sent to her location and proudly displayed on the buffet table. The tradition of the Baron of Beef was deeply rooted in British royalty and was a testament to the grandeur and opulence of the Victorian era. The image captures the essence of a bygone era, where food was not only a source of sustenance but a symbol of wealth, status, and tradition. The kitchen at Windsor Castle was a hive of activity during the holiday season, with a team of skilled chefs and cooks working tirelessly to prepare the grand feast. The roasting of the Baron of Beef was a spectacle in itself, with the aroma of roasting meat wafting through the castle halls, adding to the excitement and anticipation of the festive celebrations. This image, captured in 1887, is a reminder of the rich culinary traditions of the past and the importance of food in bringing people together during the holiday season.
