EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving by Corsi, from Giulio Ferrario's "Il Costume Antico e Moderno" published in Florence in 1843, depicts a group of Roman lictors in traditional attire. The lictors, who served as bodyguards to magistrates, are dressed in togas and adorned with laurel wreaths. They carry their ceremonial fasces, or bundles of rods and axes, also known as bipennis, which symbolized the power and authority of the magistrate they served. The scene is set against a backdrop of ancient Roman architecture, with an urn and a marble throne in the foreground. The urn, with its intricate design, may be an Etruscan or Roman imitation of Greek pottery, while the throne could represent a regal seat. A mirror, perhaps used for the magistrate to check his appearance before public audiences, is also visible. The lictors are depicted with various accessories associated with Roman mythology. Eris, the goddess of discord, is represented by a helmet on the ground, while Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and war, is symbolized by a helmet and a club. Hercules, the legendary hero, is suggested by the lionskin on one of the lictors' shoulders. Thetis, the sea goddess, is possibly represented by the Greek urna marmorea, or marble urn, which may have been used as a symbol of her association with the sea. This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the historical fashion and mythology of ancient Rome, offering a rich and intriguing representation of Roman culture and its enduring influence on Western civilization.
