EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored lithograph showcases the Ruffe, Gymnocephalus cernuus, also known as the European Ruffe or Perca cernua. The image is taken from the Naturhistorischer Bildersaal des Thierreiches, or Natural History Picture Gallery, published by Georg Friedrich Treitschke in Leipzig, Germany, in 1840. The Ruffe is a small, freshwater fish native to Europe, primarily found in the Baltic and North Seas, as well as in the Danube and Rhine rivers. This species is characterized by its elongated body, dorsal fin extending along most of its length, and distinctive, large, rounded pectoral fins. The fish in this print is depicted with a vibrant orange-red coloration on its sides, contrasting with its white belly and black spots. The meticulous attention to detail in this hand-colored lithograph is evident in the intricate patterns on the Ruffe's scales, as well as the realistic depiction of its gills and fins. The background features a lush, green aquatic environment, with various aquatic plants and other underwater creatures. Georg Friedrich Treitschke was a renowned German naturalist, publisher, and dealer in natural history specimens. His Naturhistorischer Bildersaal des Thierreiches was a comprehensive work, featuring over 1,000 hand-colored lithographs of various animals, including fish, birds, mammals, and reptiles. This Ruffe print is a testament to the high-quality and artistic skill of the time, providing a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the 19th century.
