This evocative photograph captures a moment of focused determination and discipline at the Ruysselede Reformatory School in Belgium. Established in the late 19th century, the Ruysselede Reformatory was a institution for the care and education of delinquent and neglected boys. In this image, rows upon rows of young boys are seen intently engaged in fencing practice, their expressions serious and intent. Fencing, a noble and chivalric sport, was an unusual but effective addition to the curriculum at the Ruysselede Reformatory.
