EDITORS COMMENTS
In this handcoloured lithograph by Joseph Strutt, we are transported back to the 8th and 10th centuries in Anglo-Saxon England, where the pursuit of both hunting and warfare intertwined. The top image showcases a Saxon archer, poised and focused, with his hunting dog at his side. The archer's expression is intense as he notches an arrow into his bow, ready to take aim at his quarry. The dog, alert and attentive, seems to sense the imminent release of the arrow and prepares to pounce. In the middle image, we see a close-up view of a Saxon bow and arrow. The intricately designed bow, made from yew wood, is strung with sinew, and the arrow, tipped with a flint or steel head, is ready to fly. The Saxons were renowned for their skill in archery, using it both for hunting and in warfare. The bottom image depicts a Saxon slinger, a warrior armed with a slingshot, a versatile weapon used for both hunting and battle. The slinger's expression is determined as he takes aim, with a quiver of stones at his side. The slingshot, a simple yet effective weapon, allowed the Saxons to engage their enemies from a distance, making it an essential tool in their military arsenal. This illustration, taken from Joseph Strutt's "Sports and Pastimes of the People of England," published in 1876, offers a fascinating glimpse into the daily life and military practices of the Anglo-Saxons. The combination of hunting and warfare in this image highlights the importance of these activities in their society and the interconnectedness of their daily lives and their role as warriors.
