Schleicher ASW-19B R19

Schleicher ASW-19B R19 (msn 19317), at a regional gliding competition in the 1980s. I flew this glider many times at RAF Hullavington, before it was re-allocated to another club, where it was written off after the pilot bailed out, because the elevator control was disconnected. When the elevator was connected it was delightful to fly, with reasonable performance too! Date: circa 1980

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Nostalgic Flight in the Schleicher ASW-19B R19: A Gliding Memoir from the 1980s. This evocative black-and-white photograph captures the essence of gliding in the 1980s, featuring the Schleicher ASW-19B R19 (msn 19317) at a regional gliding competition. The ASW-19B R19, a popular and versatile glider, was a common sight in the skies above airfields during this era. The image transports us back to a time when Mary Evans Picture Library's Schleicher ASW-19B R19 (msn 19317) graced the skies at RAF Hullavington. I had the privilege of flying this glider numerous times during that period, experiencing the joy and thrill it offered. Its reasonable performance made it a delight to pilot, with responsive handling and a smooth ride. However, the ASW-19B R19's tenure at RAF Hullavington came to an unfortunate end when it was reallocated to another gliding club. A tragic incident occurred when the elevator control was disconnected, forcing the pilot to bail out. While the memory of this mishap is bittersweet, the joy and excitement of flying this glider remain etched in my mind. The Schleicher ASW-19B R19 was an essential part of the aeronautical world during the 1980s, representing the spirit of aviation and the camaraderie among gliding enthusiasts. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the simple yet exhilarating experience of soaring through the skies in a glider like the Schleicher ASW-19B R19. This photograph is not only a testament to the history of gliding but also a personal memoir of my experiences with this iconic aircraft. It encapsulates the essence of a bygone era in aviation history, inviting us to relive the thrill of flight and the camaraderie of the gliding community.
