The sea urchin is depicted in its natural habitat, surrounded by the shimmering waters of the ocean. The image was drawn and engraved by the skilled hand of Richard Polydore Nodder, and published in William Elford Leach's Zoological Miscellany in 1815. The Breynia australasiae is a large, spherical sea urchin that is native to the southern hemisphere, particularly in the waters around Australia and New Zealand. Its distinctive features include the numerous, closely-packed spines that cover its surface, which are arranged in a regular pattern and vary in length and shape. The engraving captures the delicate beauty of these spines, as well as the subtle colouration of the sea urchin's body. The process of creating this engraving involved several steps.
