EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures a selection of the 770 banners carried by suffragettes and suffragists as they marched from the Embankment to the Royal Albert Hall on 13 June 1908. The National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) meeting, affectionately referred to as the "Temple of Liberty" by the women, took place in the Hall. The suffragettes and suffragists, led by the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), demanded universal suffrage, the right to vote for all women, and an extension of the franchise to include women. The banners, adorned with powerful messages and symbols, reflect the determination and passion of the women's suffrage movement. Some banners call for "Votes for Women," "Equal Franchise," and "Women's Enfranchisement." Others feature more creative slogans such as "Deeds not Words," "Fight on," and "Votes for Women and Children." The suffragettes and suffragists were committed to using peaceful protest and civil disobedience to bring attention to their cause, but they would soon turn to more militant tactics in their quest for the right to vote. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the rich history of the women's suffrage movement and the courageous women who fought for the right to be heard and to have a voice in their government."
