EDITORS COMMENTS
In this beautiful photograph, novelist Sheila Kaye-Smith (1887-1956) exchanges vows with the Reverend Theodore Penrose Fry (1891-1968) in a charming ceremony held at St. Paul's Church in St. Leonards, Sussex, in October 1924. The bride, dressed in a elegant, flowing white gown and veil, gazes lovingly at her groom, who wears the traditional robes of a curate. The Reverend Fry is the eldest son of Sir John and Lady Fray. Sheila Kaye-Smith, a renowned English novelist, was born in St. Leonards and spent most of her life in the county of Sussex. Her novels, which dealt with rural subjects and the human condition, gained her a large following and critical acclaim. The writer, who was deeply religious, later converted to Catholicism with her husband. The couple's commitment to their faith led them to build a Catholic chapel in Northiam, Sussex, where they lived. The chapel, dedicated to St. Joseph the Worker, became an important spiritual center for the local Catholic community. This photograph captures a memorable moment in the lives of these two individuals, as they begin their journey together as husband and wife, united not only by their love for each other, but also by their shared faith. The image is a testament to the power of love and the importance of religion in shaping the lives of individuals and communities.
