EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, created by John Leech in 1880, depicts a famous moment in English history: Sir Walter Raleigh laying his cape over a puddle for Queen Elizabeth I at Greenwich. The image, taken from Gilbert Abbott A Beckett's Comic History of England, showcases the intricate details of the elaborate clothing of the era. Queen Elizabeth I, dressed in a voluminous hoop dress, puff sleeves, and a huge lace ruff collar, gazes intently at Raleigh. He wears a cap adorned with a feather, a ruff, and a slashed doublet and hose. The scene is set against the backdrop of a significant historical context. Raleigh's act of chivalry comes before the infamous Gunpowder Plot of November 1604, when Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators attempted to blow up the House of Lords and assassinate King James I. Among the conspirators were Robert Catesby, Thomas Percy, and Robert Keyes, who were later revealed to have sent Baron Monteagle a warning letter about the plot. The barrels of gunpowder were discovered in the cellar beneath the House of Lords on November 5, 1604. The anachronistic elements in the image, such as the candles and the tobacco pipe that Raleigh holds, add a touch of humor and caricature to the scene. This comical take on history, with its intricate details and vivid colors, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and the lives of some of England's most iconic figures.
