EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print depicts a pivotal moment in the exploration of North America by the Spanish conquistador, Hernando de Soto. In the year 1540, De Soto and his expeditionary force encountered a fortified town in present-day Alabama, believed to be occupied by the Mound Builders or the Mississippian culture. Determined to expand Spanish territorial claims and in search of gold and other valuable resources, De Soto ordered an assault on the town. The image captures the intensity of the attack, with various artillery pieces positioned around the town's perimeter firing towards its defenses. The powerful cannons belch smoke and flame, their roars drowning out the cacophony of horse hooves and shouts from the Spanish cavalry advancing from various positions. De Soto himself, clad in armor and waving a banner, rides at the forefront of the charge. The attack on this fortified town marked a significant event in the history of North America. Although the exact location of the town remains a mystery, it is believed to be one of the first encounters between Europeans and the Native American cultures of the region. The encounter led to the spread of European diseases, which had devastating effects on the native populations, and paved the way for further Spanish exploration and colonization of the continent.
