In the year 1540, De Soto and his expeditionary force encountered a fortified town in present-day Alabama, believed to be occupied by the Mound Builders or the Mississippian culture. Determined to expand Spanish territorial claims and in search of gold and other valuable resources, De Soto ordered an assault on the town. The image captures the intensity of the attack, with various artillery pieces positioned around the town's perimeter firing towards its defenses.
