EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the South American or Brazilian tapir, Tapirus terrestris, a vulnerable species of large, herbivorous mammal native to the forests of Central and South America. The tapir, also known as the common tapir or terrestrial hippopotamus, is depicted in this engraving from Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae, published in Nuremberg in 1771. The engraving is part of a collection of rare and exotic natural specimens that once belonged to Dr. Christoph Jacob Trew's Wunderkammer or Cabinet of Curiosities. The South American tapir is the largest of the four extant tapir species, with adults reaching up to 3 meters in length and weighing up to 500 kg. Their elongated, flexible snout, which is covered in sensitive, fleshy pads, allows them to grasp and manipulate vegetation as they forage in the forest floor. Their powerful limbs enable them to move quickly through dense vegetation and swim in rivers and swamps. Despite their large size and seemingly robust numbers, tapirs are considered vulnerable due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and poaching. They are hunted for their meat, hide, and tusks, which are used in traditional medicine and as decorative items. Conservation efforts, such as habitat protection and anti-poaching measures, are essential to ensure the survival of this fascinating and important species in the wild.
