EDITORS COMMENTS
The Unknown Warrior: A Tribute to the Fallen Heroes of World War I This poignant and powerful image, published on Page 168 of the Illustrated London News on November 7, 1920, captures the solemn and moving moment as the Unknown Warrior, a symbol of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who lost their lives during the First World War, was interred at Westminster Abbey in London. The Unknown Warrior, an unidentified British soldier, was chosen from four unknown soldiers exhumed from French battlefields in 1920. His remains were brought to Britain and laid to rest in a tomb at Westminster Abbey, in the presence of King George V and Queen Mary, as well as thousands of mourners and representatives from the armed forces and various countries. This full-page illustration, created by the esteemed Illustrated London News Ltd, captures the somber and reverent atmosphere of the event. The image shows the Unknown Warrior's coffin being carried into the abbey by six soldiers, with the King and Queen standing at the entrance, paying their respects. The soldiers are dressed in their full regalia, adding a sense of dignity and honor to the occasion. The Unknown Warrior's tomb became a symbol of hope and unity for the people of Britain and the Commonwealth, and remains a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during World War I. This poignant image serves as a testament to the bravery, resilience, and sacrifice of the millions of men and women who fought and died during the war, and continues to inspire us to remember and honor their memory.
