Special Sphere Supplement Unknown Warrior

EDITORS COMMENTS
This full-page illustration is taken from The Sphere, a weekly illustrated British newspaper, published as a special supplement to commemorate the Unknown Warrior's interment at Westminster Abbey on November 11, 1920. The Unknown Warrior, an unidentified British soldier killed during the First World War, was chosen to represent the thousands of soldiers whose identities were never established. The image depicts the solemn and moving ceremony as the Unknown Warrior's coffin is carried by eight soldiers of the Royal Navy, Army, and Royal Flying Corps, followed by representatives of the British Empire's dominions and allies. The procession makes its way through the streets of London, surrounded by a large crowd of mourners, as a gun salute is fired from the HMS Revenge in the Thames. The Sphere's illustration captures the somber and poignant atmosphere of the event, with the rain-soaked streets and the somber expressions of the soldiers and the crowd. The Unknown Warrior's coffin, draped in the Union Jack, is the focal point of the image, symbolizing the sacrifice and bravery of the millions of soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War. The inscription at the bottom of the page reads, "The Unknown Warrior: Interred in Westminster Abbey, November 11, 1920." The image serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of war and the enduring sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country.
