EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology published by Bohn, London in 1837, showcases an intriguing encounter between various insects: a Spider Wasp (Pepsis atrox), a Digger Wasp (Sphex sericeus), a queen Carpenter Ant (Camponotus fervidus), and an African Spider Wasp (Pepsis severa). The Spider Wasp, Pepsis atrox, is depicted in the center of the image, its long, slender body and distinctive yellow and black stripes contrasting against the dark background. Its large, bulbous abdomen houses a paralyzed tarantula spider, which the wasp will use as a food source for its developing offspring. To the left, a Digger Wasp, Sphex sericeus, is shown with its slender body and distinctive orange and black stripes. Digger Wasps are solitary hunters that burrow in the ground and use their stingers to paralyze their prey, which they then carry back to their burrows to feed to their young. In the lower right corner, a queen Carpenter Ant, Camponotus fervidus, is shown with her large mandibles and powerful legs. Carpenter Ants are social insects that live in large colonies and excavate their nests in dead wood or the ground. The queen is the largest member of the colony and is responsible for laying eggs and maintaining the colony. In the upper right corner, an African Spider Wasp, Pepsis severa, is depicted with its long, slender body and distinctive yellow and black stripes. African Spider Wasps are larger than their North American counterparts and are known for their impressive hunting abilities. They are also known to use a unique hunting technique, in which they lure tarantulas to their nests using a decoy spider made from the legs of a dead tarantula. This stunning lithograph not only showcases the beauty and intricacy of these insects but also provides a glimpse into the fascinating world of insect behavior and ecology.
