EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, created in 1837, showcases two intriguing crustacean species: the Squat Lobster, Galathea strigosa, and the Aegla laevis. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy. The Squat Lobster, also known as Galathea strigosa or scagliosa, is depicted in the foreground. With its elongated body and distinctive, squat shape, this crustacean is a member of the Leptostracan family. Its antennae are held above its head, and its rostrum, or beak, is visible at the front of its body. In the background, the Aegla laevis, or Eglea unita or liscia, is shown. This shrimp-like crustacean belongs to the family Aeglidae. It is characterized by its long, slender body, multiple legs, and a pair of large, fan-like appendages on its abdomen. The engraving was expertly produced by Stanghi, with drawings by Jean Gabriel Pretre and direction by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin, a French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, is renowned for his exceptional work in this field. The illustration also includes several other crustaceans, such as the Narval, Plesionika, Nebalia herbstii, Mysid, Mysis oculata, Pristis, Palemon, and Fabricio. This beautiful and detailed engraving offers a glimpse into the rich marine biodiversity of the past, providing a fascinating window into the natural world as it was understood during the 19th century.
