EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the Sri Lanka Green Pigeon, Treron pompadora, also known as the Pompadour Pigeon, Columba pompadora, or the Ceylon Green Pigeon. The image is based on an illustration by Pieter de Bevere, which was supplied by Governor Joan Gideon Loten during the late 18th century. The meticulous engraving was executed by Peter Brown for his renowned work, "New Illustrations of Zoology," published by B. White in London in 1776. The Sri Lanka Green Pigeon is a native endemic bird species to the island nation of Sri Lanka. This medium-sized pigeon is characterized by its vibrant green plumage, with a distinctive red eye ring and a yellow bill. The male and female exhibit similar coloration, but the female has a slightly smaller bill. The Sri Lanka Green Pigeon is a herbivorous bird, feeding primarily on leaves, fruits, and flowers. They are found in a variety of habitats, including forests, gardens, and cultivated areas. These birds are monogamous and form long-lasting pair bonds. They nest in tree cavities, and both parents take part in incubating the eggs and raising their young. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of 18th-century ornithological illustrations. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of Sri Lanka and the remarkable biodiversity of this unique island nation.
