EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving captures the awe-inspiring statue of Zeus or Jupiter at Olympia, a masterpiece of ancient Greek sculpture created by the renowned artist Phidias around 435 BC. The statue, also known as the Capitoline Jupiter or the Olympian Jupiter, was housed in the Temple of Hera at the ancient site of Olympia, Greece. The image shows the giant seated figure of the king of the gods, dressed in a chiton and himation, with a scepter in his right hand and a small olive tree in his left. The statue was originally gilded and adorned with precious stones, making it an even more breathtaking sight. Surrounding Zeus are the nine Muses, the goddesses of the arts and sciences. Clio, Thalia, Erato, Euterpe, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Calliope, Urania, and Melpomene are depicted in various stages of artistic creation, each representing a different form of inspiration. The sarcophagus at the base of the statue is also decorated with intricate relief carvings of various mythological scenes. This engraving is based on an original drawing by Antoine-Chrysostome Quatremere de Quincy, a French archaeologist and historian, and was published in Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World" in 1842. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the engraving bring the ancient world to life, transporting us back in time to the sacred sanctuary of Olympia and the presence of the mighty Zeus.
