EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning lithograph, titled "Stemmed Plants," is an exquisite example of botanical illustration from Lorenz Oken's "Universal Natural History" published in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1841. The intricately detailed image showcases a diverse array of stemmed plants, including some of the world's most well-known and economically important species. At the center of the composition, we find the stem and leaves of a coffee plant (Coffea arabica), with its distinctive red berries bunched together. Nearby, a blueberry bush (Vaccinium corymbosum) displays its clusters of small, white flowers and juicy, blue-hued fruits. To the right, we see the papaya plant (Carica papaya) with its large, fleshy leaves and the elongated fruit, while the argan tree (Argania spinosa) from Morocco is depicted with its thorny stem and the distinctive, hard, nut-like fruit from which argan oil is extracted. The stem of the desert date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) is illustrated with its fan-shaped leaves and the elongated, spindle-shaped fruit, while the styrax tree (Styrax officinalis) is shown with its aromatic white flowers and the long, thin stems of its leaves. The olive tree (Olea europaea) is depicted with its alternate, simple leaves and the small, green fruit, while the rhododendron (Rhododendron spp.) and kalmia (Kalmia spp.) are shown with their showy, colorful flowers. The gardenia plant (Gardenia jasminoides) is illustrated with its glossy, evergreen leaves and its fragrant, white flowers. This lithograph not only highlights the beauty of these plants but also serves as a testament to the remarkable botanical knowledge of its time. It is a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the 19th century, reminding us of the importance of documenting and preserving the rich diversity of plant life.
