EDITORS COMMENTS
Stephano, the drunken butler from William Shakespeare's The Tempest, is depicted in this promotional postcard from the Theatre Royal in Birmingham. This production of The Tempest, featuring Herbert Beerbohm Tree in the title role, opened at His Majesty's Theatre in London on September 14, 1904, and came to the Theatre Royal for a one-week engagement on December 4, 1905. In this image, Stephano, portrayed by an unidentified actor, is shown in a moment of revelry, his face contorted in laughter as he raises a bottle to his lips. The expression on his face, a perfect blend of merriment and inebriation, captures the essence of this beloved comic character from the popular Shakespearean play. The set in the background suggests the stormy atmosphere of the island where much of the action in The Tempest takes place. The Edwardian era, during which this production was staged, was a time of innovation and excitement in the world of theatre. Tree's production of The Tempest was no exception, with its elaborate sets, stunning costumes, and talented cast. The production was a huge success, both in London and on tour, and remains a significant moment in the history of Shakespearean theatre. This postcard offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when live theatre was a major form of popular entertainment and Shakespeare's plays continued to captivate audiences with their timeless themes of love, magic, and the human condition.
