EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the enigmatic String Jellyfish, Apolemia uvaria, also known as Stephanomia uvaria or Stefanomia grappolo. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The intricate detail of the illustration is a testament to the skill of its creators. The engraving was executed by Corsi, with drawings by Jean Gabriel Pretre, and was directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, and his work continues to be celebrated for its beauty and accuracy. The String Jellyfish is a unique and fascinating marine organism, belonging to the class of Echinoderms, which also includes starfish and sea urchins. Unlike its more familiar relatives, the String Jellyfish is not a typical jellyfish, but rather a colonial organism made up of numerous small, interconnected individuals. These individuals are connected by thin, string-like structures, giving the colony its name. The illustration shows the String Jellyfish in its natural habitat, with the undulating movements of the water bringing the colony to life. The delicate, translucent bell-shaped structures of the individual jellyfish can be seen, as well as the fine, almost invisible threads that connect them. The intricate patterns and colours of the illustration capture the beauty and complexity of this remarkable marine creature, which continues to intrigue scientists and naturalists alike. This image is a rare and precious example of the art of botanical illustration in the 19th century, and a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating the natural world through art and science.
