EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Sugar Kelp and Other Seaweeds," is a beautiful example of the exquisite botanical illustrations found in Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The engraving features several types of seaweeds, including Sugar Kelp (Saccharina latissima, 1), which is characterized by its large, flat blades and brown color. Red Seaweed (Delesseria sanguinea, 2) is depicted in vibrant red hues, while Porphyra purpurea (3) is shown in a deep purple. Osmundaria fimbriata (4) is also illustrated, with its delicate, fringed fronds. The intricate detail and precise shading in this engraving are a testament to the skill and artistry of Turpin and the engraver, Corsi. The use of handcolouring adds an additional layer of beauty and depth to the illustration. The seaweeds are displayed against a plain background, allowing their unique features to take center stage. This illustration is not only a valuable historical record of these seaweeds, but it also showcases the importance of botanical illustration in the advancement of scientific knowledge during the 19th century. The intricate details captured in this engraving provide valuable information about the morphology and identification of these marine organisms, which continues to be relevant in modern marine biology and ecology.
