This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Johann Carl Bock after Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur (The Butterflies in Representations according to Nature), published in Erlangen in 1786, showcases three rare moth species: the Sweet Gale Moth (Acronicta euphorbiae), the Scarce Dagger Moth (Acronicta auricoma), and the Knot Grass Moth (Acronicta rumicis). The Sweet Gale Moth, depicted in the first five images, is a member of the Phalaena family, commonly known as tiger moths. The female moth is shown with her wings spread wide, revealing the intricate pattern of orange, black, and white stripes. The male, shown in the pupa and larva stages, is characterized by its distinctive orange head and legs, and a black thorax with white spots. The Scarce Dagger Moth, illustrated in the sixth image, is a member of the same family and is known for its unique wing shape, which resembles a dagger. The moth's wings are a beautiful shade of brown with white spots and a distinctive black line running along the edge. The Knot Grass Moth, shown in the last three images, is also a member of the Phalaena family.
