Thomas Coryate (1577-1617), an English traveller and author, is depicted in this early 17th century portrait. Coryate is known for his adventurous spirit and his extensive travels throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. He is seen here wearing the fashionable ruff collar of the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, a sign of his affluence and status as a scholar and gentleman. Born in Devizes, Wiltshire, Coryate embarked on his travels in 1608, documenting his experiences in his famous book "Coryat's Crudities: or, the Most Nice and Delightfull Observations Made in his Ten Years Travel, through the Low Countries, Germany, Italy, and the Levant." This work, published in 1611, was a popular and influential account of European and Middle Eastern culture, and helped to fuel the growing interest in travel and exploration during the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods. Coryate's travels took him to many notable cities and landmarks, including Antwerp, Rome, Constantinople, and Jerusalem. He was particularly fascinated by the customs, languages, and people he encountered along the way, and his writings offer a rich and detailed record of European and Middle Eastern life during the early modern period. Despite his success as a travel writer, Coryate's later years were marked by financial difficulties and personal tragedy. He died in poverty in London in 1617, but his legacy as a pioneering travel writer and cultural observer continues to be celebrated to this day.
