EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, titled "Tomba di Geremia" or "The Tomb of the Prophet Jeremiah," dates back to the 1800s. The image was created by Carocci, based on Giulio Ferrario's work in his publication "Il Costume Antico e Moderno" or "The Ancient and Modern Costume of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1833. The engraving is a reproduction from Luigi Mayer's "Views in Egypt, Palestine and Other Parts of the Ottoman Empire," published in 1804. The illustration depicts the tomb of the biblical prophet Jeremiah, believed to be located in the Kidron Valley near Jerusalem. According to tradition, Jeremiah was buried there after being thrown into a pit and left to die during the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem in 586 BC. The image shows a group of knights, possibly from the Order of Solomon's Temple or the Templars, standing guard next to the tomb. The knights, dressed in their distinctive military attire, are shown with their swords drawn, suggesting a sense of protection and vigilance. The crusader-style clothing, complete with crosses and chainmail, reflects the historical context of the time, which saw numerous crusades to the Holy Land. The intricately designed tomb, adorned with ornate carvings and symbols, stands out against the barren landscape. The image offers a glimpse into the rich history and cultural significance of the region, as well as the fashion and military practices of the time. This illustration is a testament to the enduring allure of the ancient world and the stories that continue to inspire and intrigue us today.
