EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving by Migliavacca, from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1844, depicts the Tomb of Widukind, the Saxon leader who died in 785. Widukind was a formidable opponent of the Frankish king Charlemagne during the Saxon Wars. The image shows Widukind's tomb located in what appears to be a castle or fortified church, possibly in Luxembourg. The tomb is surrounded by a procession of knights, all dressed in full armor, paying their respects to the deceased leader. The scene is reminiscent of a medieval tournament or joust, with drummers and trumpeters leading the way and colorful banners waving in the wind. At the center of the procession, the figure of Widukind is depicted mounted on horseback, dressed in the traditional Saxon attire of the time. The tomb itself is ornately decorated with intricate carvings and symbols, possibly representing the holy Roman Empire or the power of the Saxon people. The image is further enhanced by the use of vibrant colors and detailed shading, giving it a vivid and pittoresque quality. This engraving is a fascinating glimpse into the historical fashion and customs of the medieval period, particularly in the context of the Saxon Wars and the clash of cultures between the Saxons and the Frankish Empire. The image is also a testament to the skill of Migliavacca and the production team at Giulio Ferrario's publishing house, who were able to create such a detailed and evocative image using the techniques of copperplate engraving and hand-coloring.
