Travellers Dining at a French Inn, Late 18th Century: A Scene of Relief and Indulgence after a Long Journey This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Thomas Rowlandson and published by Rudolph Ackermann in 1821, captures a delightful moment in the lives of 18th-century travellers as they dine at a French inn. The image is based on an illustration from Moritz August von Thummel's "Reise in die mittleren Provinzen van Frankreich im Jahre 1785-1786," translated and abridged as "Journal of Sentimental Travels in the Southern Provinces of France." The travellers, weary from their journey, sit around a table d'hôte, a communal dining table where guests share meals with fellow travellers and the innkeeper's family. The innkeeper, dressed in traditional French attire, pours wine for his guests, while a servant carries in a large platter of food.
