EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Tropical Pitcher Plant, Nepenthes distillatoria, also known as Nepenthes indica, Muttonwood, Turpinia occidentalis, Pitcher Plant of Panamá, or Pannocchiuta. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic skill are evident in this exquisite representation of the Nepenthes distillatoria. The Tropical Pitcher Plant is a carnivorous plant native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. It is known for its unique pitchers, which are used to trap and digest insects. The plant's vibrant colors and intricate patterns make it a popular subject for botanical illustrations. This particular illustration was engraved by Stanghi, and the plate was published by Batelli e Figli. The hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and detail to the already impressive engraving. The Nepenthes distillatoria is shown here with its pitchers in various stages of growth, showcasing the plant's unique morphology and adaptations. The history of the Nepenthes distillatoria goes back to ancient times, with references to it in the works of Pliny the Elder and Dioscorides. Today, it remains an important subject of study in the fields of botany and biology, and its beautiful form continues to inspire artists and collectors alike.
