EDITORS COMMENTS

True Cinnamon, scientifically known as Cinnamomum verum (synonymously referred to as Cinnamomum zeylanicum), is a small, evergreen tree native to Sri Lanka and South India. This stunning chromolithograph is an exquisite representation of the true cinnamon tree, as illustrated by Walther Muller for Hermann Adolph Koehler's Medicinal Plants, edited by Gustav Pabst, published in Germany in 1887. True cinnamon, also known as Ceylon cinnamon, is celebrated for its distinctive aromatic bark, which has been used for centuries in traditional herbal medicine and as a flavoring agent in various culinary applications. The inner bark is peeled from the tree, rolled up into quills, and then dried. The quills are then ground into a powder, releasing the warm, sweet, and slightly spicy fragrance that is characteristic of true cinnamon. The tree can grow up to 15 meters tall and bears small, white flowers that bloom in clusters. The leaves are glossy, dark green, and ovate in shape. The tree thrives in humid climates and requires a significant amount of rainfall and shade. True cinnamon has been used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. It has been used to help alleviate symptoms of the common cold, sore throat, and digestive issues. In the culinary world, true cinnamon is a popular ingredient in baking, desserts, and savory dishes, particularly in Middle Eastern, Indian, and Asian cuisines. This beautiful chromolithograph not only serves as a testament to the rich history and cultural significance of true cinnamon, but also showcases the intricate details of the tree's anatomy, making it a valuable addition to any botanical collection.
