EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving by Migliavacca, from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," offers a rare glimpse into the awe-inspiring interior of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece. Built between 447 and 432 BC as a temple dedicated to Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, the Parthenon is a symbol of ancient Greek civilization and a masterpiece of Doric and Ionic architecture. The image reveals the Propylaea, the monumental gateway to the Acropolis, and the entrance to the Parthenon itself. Inside, the walls are adorned with intricate paintings, some of which are believed to be the work of the renowned Greek painter Polignotus. The central focus of the temple is the statue of Athena, the goddess herself, depicted wearing a chiton and himation, and holding her iconic Aegis shield, adorned with the image of the goddess Nike, the personification of victory. The interior of the Parthenon was not open to the public during ancient times, and very few records and descriptions of its decoration have survived. This engraving, therefore, provides a valuable historical record of the temple's interior, offering us a glimpse into the artistic and cultural achievements of ancient Greece. The meticulous attention to detail in Migliavacca's engraving is evident in the intricate rendering of the Doric and Ionic columns, the propilei, and the delicate friezes that adorn the walls. This beautiful illustration is a testament to the enduring allure of the Parthenon and the fascination it continues to hold for scholars, artists, and visitors alike.
