Cemetery Commission Commonwealth Cwgc Graves Ieper Tyne Ypres

EDITORS COMMENTS
Front View of Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery, Ieper (Ypres), Belgium, 2016 This evocative image captures the front view of Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Cemetery, located near the Belgian town of Ieper (Ypres) in West Flanders, Belgium. Established in 1920, Tyne Cot is the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world, with over 11,954 graves and 35,000 names commemorated on the memorial to the missing. The cemetery was named after the Canadian 3rd Division's capture of the Tyne Cot farmhouse during the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. The meticulously maintained rows of white headstones stretch out towards the horizon, creating a hauntingly beautiful and poignant scene. Each headstone bears the name, rank, regiment, and date of death of the soldier or nurse buried there, a testament to the sacrifices made during the First World War. The crosses and Stars of David mark the graves of those of various faiths. The Tyne Cot Cemetery is a poignant reminder of the human cost of the First World War, and a place of pilgrimage for those seeking to pay their respects to the fallen heroes. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission was established in 1917 to ensure that the graves of the fallen soldiers from the British Empire were maintained and marked with dignity and respect. Today, the Commission continues to care for over 2,500,000 Commonwealth war dead in 23,000 locations in 153 countries.
