EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Christian Leinberger and published in Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae in 1771, showcases an intriguing assemblage of marine mollusks and their eggs from the Wunderkammer or Cabinet of Curiosities of Dr. Christoph Jacob Trew and P.L. Muller. The central focus of the image is a Whelk, Buccinum undatum (1), with its spiral shell and distinctive ridges. Surrounding it are various species of sea snails, including Cymbium species 2 and 3, which are characterized by their large, flat, fan-shaped shells. Two Whelks, Buccinum ampullatum (4 and 6), are depicted with their ovary, highlighting their reproductive cycle. The intrigue of this image lies not only in the diverse range of mollusks but also in the presence of Vespertilio and Melicera (5), likely representing the eggs of a bird and a lizard, respectively, which have found their way into the whelks' egg nests (2 and 3). The meticulous attention to detail in the engraving, from the delicate shading to the precise depiction of each organism, offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the 18th century.
