EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored steel engraving, created by the Pauquet brothers and based on an illustration by Alexis Nicolas Noel for Hippolyte Lucas's "Histoire Naturelle des Lepidopteres d'Europe" (Natural History of European Butterflies) published in 1864, showcases the dorsal and ventral views of two closely related yet distinct species of butterflies: the White Admiral (Limenitis camilla) and the Southern White Admiral (Limenitis reducta). The White Admiral, depicted on the left, is characterized by its striking orange-brown wings with black borders and distinctive white spots. The underside of its wings displays a similar pattern but with more prominent black markings. The White Admiral is found throughout Europe, except for the northernmost regions. The Southern White Admiral, shown on the right, is slightly smaller in size and has a more southerly distribution, primarily in the Mediterranean region and southern Europe. Its wings are adorned with orange-brown patches, black borders, and white spots, but the underside of its wings is more subdued, with fewer white spots and more prominent black markings. The Pauquet brothers' meticulous engraving techniques and Alexis Nicolas Noel's precise illustrations provide an accurate and beautiful representation of these two species, which were important additions to the growing body of knowledge about European butterflies during the 19th century. The intricate details captured in this print serve as a testament to the dedication and passion of naturalists and artists of the time for documenting the natural world.
