EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Enchanting Encounters: The White-tailed Sabrewing and Blue-throated Sabrewing" This exquisite handcoloured steel engraving showcases two captivating hummingbird species, the White-tailed Sabrewing (Campylopterus ensipennis) and the Blue-throated Sabrewing (Trochilus latipennis). The image is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Ornithology, Hummingbirds, published in Edinburgh by W.H. Lizars in 1834. The White-tailed Sabrewing, also known as the Long-billed Sabrewing, is depicted on the left side of the print. This hummingbird is characterized by its long, curved bill, iridescent green back, and a striking white tail. The male's throat is adorned with a narrow, white band, while the female sports a duller, greyish-green throat. The White-tailed Sabrewing is native to Central and South America, primarily residing in forests and woodlands. On the right side of the print, the Blue-throated Sabrewing graces us with its presence. This hummingbird boasts a vibrant, metallic blue throat, a green back, and a forked tail with a white tip. The male's body is adorned with a green chest, while the female's underparts are a duller, greyish-green. The Blue-throated Sabrewing is native to the Andes Mountains in South America. Both of these hummingbirds are masterful flyers, capable of hovering in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings 12-80 times per second. Their long, curved bills are adapted for extracting nectar from flowers, while their metabolic rates are among the highest of any animal, enabling them to consume up to twice their body weight in nectar daily. This stunning handcoloured steel engraving not only serves as a testament to the artistic mastery of the time but also highlights the natural beauty and diversity of these fascinating hummingbird species.
