EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, the eleven pioneering Women Members of Parliament (Women MPs) who were elected to the House of Commons in June 1929 are captured in a moment of triumph. From left to right, we see: Nancy Astor, Viscountess Astor (Conservative), Katharine Stewart-Murray, Duchess of Atholl (Conservative), Gwendolen Florence Mary Guinness, Countess of Iveagh (Conservative), Margaret Bondfield (Labour), Marion Phillips (Labour), Ethel Bentham (Labour), Mary Hamilton (Labour), Ellen Wilkinson (Labour), Megan Lloyd George (Liberal), Jenny (Jennie) Lee (Labour), Edith Picton-Turbervill (Labour), and Susan Lawrence (Labour). This photograph marks a significant milestone in British political history, as these women broke the gender barrier that had long excluded women from holding seats in the House of Commons. Their election came as a result of the Representation of the People Act 1928, which granted women the right to vote and stand for election. The women in this photograph represent various political parties, with six Labour Party members, four Conservatives, and one Liberal. Their diverse backgrounds and experiences reflect the broad range of perspectives and voices that were brought into the political arena. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the determination and resilience of these trailblazing women, who defied societal expectations and paved the way for future generations of women in politics. Their election to the House of Commons marked a turning point in the struggle for gender equality and women's rights in the UK.
