EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured ukiyo-e woodblock print by Toyokuni Utagawa, titled "Imayo Sugata" (Picture Book of the Modern Forms and Figures), depicts a scene from the 18th century merchant or artisan class in Japan. The image takes place in the elegant interior of a daimyo's (feudal lord) residence, where a group of chōnin (townswomen) are gathered, engaged in various activities. In the foreground, a waka poetry tutor sits cross-legged on a tatami mat, surrounded by her students. They are intently focused on their writing, their brushes poised above inkstone and paper. Servants bustle about the room, preparing tea, sewing, and wrapping gifts. One servant carries a tray laden with rice, while another balances a kettle on a stove. The room is filled with the trappings of wealth and refinement. Kimonos, folded neatly on the floor, tobacco pipes, boxes, mirrors, and hairdressing items are all present. The women wear the latest fashions, their geta (wooden clogs) peeking out from under their skirts. A mother nursing her baby adds a touch of domesticity to the scene. The print is a vibrant and detailed depiction of the daily life of the merchant and artisan class during the Edo period. The intricate woodcut technique used to create the print showcases the skill and artistry of the ukiyo-e tradition. This image offers a glimpse into the rich cultural history of Japan during the 18th century.
